The Making of the Museum of Jazz, and Art; more than just music.
This event, included a selected panel, that introduced The Museum of Jazz & Art
(MOJA Oakland) not simply as a museum but as an economically viable cultural and educational project. MOJA plans to Disrupt the Jazz Paradigm by repositioning jazz as a transformative force that shapes every facet of life, as a Global expression: history, health/healing, identity, innovation, and imagination. It is a living archive of creativity and survival.
We discussed the economic viability, programming, social benefits, and Jazz as a global expression. The audience was strategically selected to include key local community stakeholders and financial community.
"Jazz like Architecture require the team or players to operate within improvisational guidelines. Songs and buildings have themes, structured forms and harmonic frameworks."
David Allen, MOJA Board Chairman, CEO
"MOJA must tell a relevant and comprehensive history of Jazz. Done correctly, this is a long and complex journey, especially recognizing the times that we live in…David and I both ideally would like MOJA to simultaneously incorporate a cultural history of the US which means, in turn, the world; we mean every aspect of life, as it has been impacted by African American music over hundreds of years, i.e., Recognizing this river of music and its many tributaries from field chants to the present.”
— Terry Stewart, MOJA Vice Chairman, COO
